Chapter 26 - HIBI

Minho was interrupted from his thoughts when Princess Ara asked him, “Why did you get me a painting?” The eunuch was embarrassed to tell Princess Ara what the gift was but ended up telling her anyway. Minho laughed, “I just got you a valuable painting for a gift. You don’t like it?” Princess Ara sighed, “Its not that I don’t like it. I just have no use for it.”

Everyone felt dumbstruck by Minho’s stupidity. He didn’t keep in mind that Princess Ara was blind. He was charming, but he was always lacking when it compared to Prince Jimin. His gift was useless, and the princess wasn’t afraid to point it out.

Princess Ara never liked her second brother, Minho. He always ridiculed her and called her retarded because she couldn’t see. He was good at hiding his evil personality in front of women and important figures. He didn’t hide his disgust and hatred towards her and still expected to lie in front of his fans.

Yuna watched Minho’s face turn red from embarrassment when Princess Ara humiliated Minho in front of everybody. She couldn’t help but grin after watching the scene. Minho glared at his sister and returned to his seat in resignation.

All the princes and princesses gave gifts to Princess Ara. The gifts mainly consisted of dresses and accessories. The nobles also gave out gifts that were similar. None of the gifts stood out compared to the gifts from the Emperor or Prince Jimin. It seemed that almost everyone had handed out gifts except for Yuna.

Princess Ara seemed tired after going through the pile of gifts. She wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary. Most people came to her party to flaunt their wealth and position. She didn’t have many expectations for any of the gifts. She just wanted to rest in her palace before having to get married away to a stranger.

The Emperor saw this and asked everyone, “I wanted to make sure that there was no one else that had any gifts to give Princess Ara. If that is all, we should move on to the next part of the event.” As the Emperor was planning on moving on, a little girl courageously interrupted him. The girl had a simple green hanbok on with little to no accessories.

The Emperor and the princes were only interested in what the girl had to give because she was seated next to the General. She must be the general’s daughter. No one had seen the General’s daughter, and this was the first time she had decided to attend an event. The girl wasn’t a beauty, and she didn’t stand out very much. It was no wonder that no one noticed her existence throughout the whole event.

The little girl straightened her back and walked up to the platform where the Princess was seated. The General had a doting expression on his face as he watched Yuna appear before the royal family.

Yuna bowed when she greeted the royal family, “Greetings to the Emperor and Empress. My name is Kim, Yuna and my father is the general and prime minister. I have not had the chance to meet you as of yet. I’m sorry for being absent for most of the previous events that has happened over the years. I would like to express my apology to the royal family.”

The Emperor did not show any anger when he heard Yuna, “It’s alright. I’m sure that your father was the reason for your absence. I’ve heard of how much your father dotes on you and it is not a secret to everyone that he is overprotective when it comes to his daughter. I’m curious as to see what you have prepared for Princess Ara.”

Yuna nodded, “Many thanks to the Emperor for understanding my absence. I have prepared a gift for the Princess, but I hope that she will like it.” Yuna turned and faced the Princess and bowed to her. She greeted the Princess the same way she greeted the Emperor and Empress.

Prince Jimin didn’t have many expectations for the general’s daughter. Jimin wasn’t interested in any females and he didn’t expect Yuna to be any different. He assumed that the general’s daughter would gift some accessory or something that had no value.

Minho felt the same way as Prince Jimin. He didn’t see anything special about Yuna and thought he probably never will find anything special about her. She didn’t look half as good as the concubines and princesses that resided in the palace. He thought it would be easy for him to gain Yuna’s heart. All he needed to do was reveal his handsome face and she would fall for him instantly.

Yuna did not ask any servants to grab the gift for her. She went back to her seat and pulled out a box that was wrapped with some shiny material. It was not common for people to wrap gifts in Guwon. Yuna was used to wrapping gifts because she had lived through the modern era.

Her gift was wrapped in a beautiful red wrapping paper with a white bow that was tied neatly on top. She handed the gift to the princess and explained, “I’ve wrapped your present with a special kind of paper. All you need to do is pull the string to loosen the bow and then you can just rip the paper off.”

Everyone was shocked at Yuna when she told the princess to rip the paper. Why would she wrap the present with such a pretty paper and tell the princess to just rip it up? They felt that Yuna was being wasteful. The princess was not aware of everyone’s thoughts and immediately followed Yuna’s instructions.

When the pretty red paper came off, a simple box was revealed. People were at the edge of their seats wondering what Yuna could’ve gotten the princess. The gift was presented in such a unique way, they couldn’t even think about what the gift could be.

When the princess lifted the lid of the box, a book was revealed to everyone. Many of the nobles sneered at Yuna when they saw the simple book. They felt disappointed when they saw how simple the book was. Why would Yuna get her a book when the princess was blind? They felt that Yuna was just as stupid as Minho.

The Emperor was outraged when he saw the gift. Was she trying to ridicule the princess for being blind? He slammed the table with his hands and glared down at Yuna from his position. He shouted, “What is the meaning of this? Are you trying to make fun of the princess? I’ve never in my life felt so offended by this gift!”

Yuna stood before the royal family with a serene expression. She didn’t seem to be afraid. She had the courage to offend a member of the royal family at their own event. The Emperor could not stand for anyone to disgrace his family.

Yuna replied, “Please don’t misunderstand. This book is not just any ordinary book. This book cannot be read by anyone but the princess.” The Emperor looked at the cover of the book once more. How could this book be any different? He ordered the eunuch to fetch the book for him to look at it more closely.

When the eunuch handed him the book, he noticed that the cover did not seem to have any letters on it. He was confused. He opened the book and noticed that there was not a single line in the book, and it seemed to be empty pages with some bumps on it.

The audience watched as the emperor drew question marks at the unusual book. Yuna explained, “I’ve specially prepared this book for Princess Ara and I plan to give her many more. The contents of that book have information that may be useful in educating the princess. I know that she hasn’t been able to properly learn anything because of her eyesight.”

The Emperor’s tone lightened a smidge when he realized that he overreacted too much towards the general’s daughter. He questioned, “How will the princess be able to read such a book?”

Yuna clarified, “As you can tell, there are a bunch of bumps on the pages and the front cover. Most people that are blind are known to have heightened senses. In exchange for the loss of eyesight, they have a heightened sense for smell, touch, and hearing. I’ve developed this book for the princess because she could use touch to decipher the writing.”

Everyone that heard Yuna was shocked beyond words. How could this little girl come up with such a clever way to help the princess. No one would have imagined that this little girl had the capability to create something so extraordinary. Both Minho and Jimin had their mouths open wide in shock.

Yuna continued to explain, “Although I am not able to cure the princess’s eyes, I can help her live life more comfortably. The book is just one of many that I would like to offer the princess.” After Yuna’s explanation, the eunuch took the book to Princess Ara for her to feel. Princess Ara was not used to writing and she still could not decipher the writing.

Princess Ara asked, “Miss Yuna, I still cannot decipher what is written here even though I can feel the little bumps.” Yuna smiled at the princess, “It’s okay. That’s why I would like to make a request to both the Emperor and Empress.” The Empress could sense that something was wrong. She felt hesitant to let Yuna continue, but she had no choice.

The Emperor spoke, “What would you like to request?” Yuna replied, “I understand that both your highness’ have plans for Princess Ara to be married. I believe that she should find a husband to live happily and prosperously, but there is a problem with that.

Princess Ara has not been properly educated. If she is to be married to a neighboring prince or anyone of higher status, she should have the knowledge that is equivalent to her husbands. Although husbands are the

ones that provide for the family with their occupations, wives also have it tough. They’re in charge of finances and everything in the household. I believe that Princess Ara would be well off if she were to be given a proper education.

I would like to request for Princess Ara to wait on her marriage and spend some time on studying properly. If you would just give me the opportunity, I would like to teach Princess Ara how to decipher these books.”

The Emperor felt that Yuna was right. He didn’t want Princess Ara to be abused by her husband’s family for being incompetent. He felt gratitude for the smart girl that was willing to help his daughter out.
