Yuna never had the chance to meet him in her past life so she had no clue of the relationship between her father and him. She wondered how they met and how they became so close. Maybe it was fate like he’d mentioned, but she didn’t believe in it. She’d rather believe that all the choices that were made were her own free will. It would be depressing to think that everything in life resorted to a fate instead of free will.
Yuna blurted out the question, “So how did you meet my father?” Eunho seemed to be pondering about the question she mentioned. It looked like he didn’t want to answer. She found it odd that he wouldn’t answer a simple question. She then continued asking questions, “Did you meet my father on the battlefield?”
He nodded without saying a single word. She felt like she was talking to a wall. He didn’t seem to want to answer her questions. Maybe she was being too imposing? She felt oddly frustrated when he didn’t bother to answer her properly.
Yuna decided it was better to just find out the details later. He didn’t seem to want to bother with her annoying questions. She paid no attention to him and walked to the nearest tree to get out of the scorching sun. She had no clue what she looked like at that moment, but it sure wasn’t pretty. She found a great spot in the shade and chose to sit under the tree.
She wasn’t worried about her kidnappers. They probably knew that there was someone here to help her. None of those maids were seen and it was just Eunho and her. Eunho followed her to the shade without question. He stood next to the tree with a stiff body. He looked very uncomfortable and it bothered her. While she was sitting comfortably, he was standing there awkwardly.
She gestured for him to sit next to her, “Please sit. You look uncomfortable.” He sat down, but it was still very far from where she was sitting. Maybe he didn’t like being close to her. She felt a bit disappointed, but she wouldn’t want to admit that to him. She didn’t want to bother him.
He unexpectedly pulled out a pouch that contained water in it. He handed her the pouch and said, “Drink.” She took the pouch and gulped down most of the contents of the pouch. She was parched.
She hadn’t told him anything about how she was feeling, yet he instantly knew. He was good at taking care of her. Not that she wanted him to. She appreciated his help every time and it looked like he was going to be next to her to protect her from future threats. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to be on friendly terms with him.
She handed the pouch back to him and said, “Thanks. I needed that.” He nodded and put the pouch away. She got comfortable underneath the tree and stared at the sky in a daze. She was out of energy and the world seemed to be spinning. She laid her back against the tree trunk. She needed some time to cool down and calm herself down.
Her life was being threatened on a constant basis and she couldn’t get herself to calm down. She had gotten so used to living a life without much danger in the modern era, she forgot that she would live a harder life in this ancient era. She sighed and silently observed the sky.
Eunho watched her as she cooled off. Her makeup was smudged on her face and the layers of clothing looked extremely uncomfortable. Regardless of how messy she looked; he still found her beautiful. Of course, he wasn’t going to let her find out what he thought. He felt bad for keeping her in the dark about his relationship with the general, but he didn’t want her to feel sad.
He knew her since a long time ago, but it wasn’t the right time to let her know how he knew her. It would be better off she didn’t know. The first time he had met her was when she was barely 5 years old. Of course, it wasn’t in this lifetime.
She was much younger than she was now, and her personality was very different. He was only 6 at the time. He also wasn’t the same. It was during his most difficult time. He grew up with a single mother that struggled to put bread on the table. He always believed that his mother would stay with him and figure out ways to survive the cold winters, but that never happened.
On his 6th birthday, his mother chose to abandon him. She found a noble husband that was willing to take care of her, but he wasn’t willing to accept him as his son. Eunho’s mother was given the chance to choose the life of luxury with her new husband or live the life of poverty with her son. She chose the first option.
He remembered that day clearly. He begged her to no end. He was on his knees for days in front of his stepfather’s home. He refused to move an inch even when the rain poured down on him. His mother never acknowledged him. She treated him like a beggar that went crazy. His stepfather noticed him waiting in front of the gates.
The little boy was covered with mud and dirt. He found the boy to be filthy and unruly. He despised beggars. He found the sight of them repulsive. He demanded the guards to throw him out on the streets without caring to listen to anything he had to say. Eunho had no where to go. He was abandoned by his mother and he was too young to take care of himself.
He spent days on the street scrounging for food. Most of the passerby’s found him repulsive. They felt pity for the little orphan boy, but no one was willing to help him. He grew used to people pitying him and some even pointed out how worthless he was.
The shopkeepers in the market were especially judgmental towards him. They were used to beggars that roamed the streets and they saw Eunho as another one of them. They were only looking for paying customers.
At some point, he grew so thin and malnourished that he could barely walk around the streets to beg. He grew the urge to steal from the shops. He found a bakery that sold fragrant bread that covered the streets with the amazing smell of food. He couldn’t resist his urge to eat any longer. When the shopkeeper was busy with a customer, he grabbed some bread and began running away.
The shopkeeper saw him running, so he chased him down the marketplace. He yelled at the people around them to catch the thief. He hardly had the strength to run away. He was extremely unlucky, and the shopkeeper caught him without much effort.
The shopkeeper was so angry with him that he began beating him. He shouted, “How dare you steal from my shop? I’ve spent all morning baking this bread. I’m not about to let some filthy beggar steal from me! I’m sick and tired of all you beggars that steal from me on the daily.”
Eunho was on the floor in pain while the shopkeeper continuously kicked him in his ribs. Most of the people agreed with the shopkeeper and encouraged him to beat the boy senseless. The pain became excruciating and the only thought he had was to get away so that he could live. The crowd of people pointed fingers at him and cursed him. No one was willing to help him.
He struggled to get the words out of his mouth, “H…he..lp m…e” A man that stood not too far grimaced at his curled up figure and said, “He deserved it. Who told him to steal?” The shopkeeper grew angrier each time someone encouraged him. Eunho felt that he could not withstand the kicks any longer.
